It’s really not a matter of one or the other. If you want to maximize your online income, you’re going to do both. There is absolutely no way you can personally offer your target market everything they’re going to buy…so you definitely want to include affiliate links, even if you sell your own products.

As one of my favorite Internet marketing teachers, John Reese, says – People are going to buy from your commission no matter what you do. You may as well make some money doing it.

Having your own products often allows you a higher profit margin and you’ll be building your own list of customers that will buy from you over and over again. But sticking with your own products can be limiting.

Let’s say you’re writing an ecourse about getting a better night’s sleep and you have an ebook on the topic. Obviously, you’ll promote your ebook in the course, but there are other products you can recommend too. Perhaps some more comfortable pillows, eye masks or even a special herbal tea that encourages a more restful sleep. The possibilities are endless if you open your business up to promoting all the products your target market needs and desires.

People always have all kinds of questions about starting their own affiliate program and it’s always a good idea to be prepared. Starting and managing your own affiliate program isn’t something that can be done on the fly. It takes carefully preparation and planning, but the results are well worth it. Here are 3 commonly asked questions:

Question 1: How much commission should I offer in my affiliate program?

How much you offer will depend on the amount you can afford, taking into consideration the lifetime value of a customer, what your competition is doing and how attractive you can make your offer.

As a general statement, information products usually have a higher commission rate – often between 25-50% with the higher end being more common. Consumer products with smaller profit margins can be as low as 5%, but don’t often go above 20%.

But what you charge should be based on your own unique business. Here are some more things to help you come to a decision:

Sometimes it’s okay to pay a bit more for a first-time customer who will buy from you over and over again.

Always see what your competition is offering, but you don’t have to get into a commission war. Just make you can make your program very attractive through good conversion rates, unique and useful promotional tools and other attractive features.

Question 2: What kind of affiliate tools should I provide to my affiliates?

The simplest answer is: Give them what they want.

Talk to your affiliates and see what they need to serve their unique audience needs, and where possible, provide it to them.

For hard-hitting promotions, you can craft email copy, conduct live teleseminars with content and sales pitch, special reports, etc.

For the content-starved webmaster (and there are plenty out there), give them things like articles, free ebooks and other informational content.

The important thing is to listen to your affiliates and watch which tools convert best.

Question 3: Q: Can I have an affiliate program with a service-based business?

Sure you can. If you have a profit margin or a lifetime customer value that allows you to pay commissions, certainly.

If you have services available that are at a set price, it’s easy to automate everything and run your program, just like a product-based one.

If you charge by the hour or have to give project estimates, it’s a little tougher to automate completely.

Here are a few options:

- Have a script that can track who referred your potential client to you. Ex. Affiliate recommends your service through a tracking link. Potential client clicks the link, checks out your website and fills out a form for more information. Your system tells you who referred the client and if they purchase your services, you can give the affiliate a commission.

- You could do it as a pay-per-lead opportunity where the affiliate is paid a smaller fee for every person that fills out the form for more information. This would be easy to automate in most affiliate systems that can handle pay-per-lead transactions.

- Don’t want to go with a full-blown affiliate program? You can institute a client referral program where you simply allow your clients to recommend your service, in return for credit for services. When a new client comes to you, you ask where they heard about you and you add a credit to your referring client’s account

An affiliate force is an incredibly powerful thing and when you consider you don’t have to pay affiliates anything until they produce results for you, it’s one of the best deals going in Internet marketing today. Plan your program well and you’ll soon have your own active force of affiliates bringing you new customers every day.

As an affiliate marketer, you know better than anyone just how important it is to drive traffic to your affiliate website. After all, that is how you make a profit. Add messages to your customer autoresponder that help them consume your product, then after a few weeks ask them for a testimonial.

If you’re just starting out you may not have any testimonials just yet. Whatever you do do not make them up! Falsifying testimonials is a bad idea. What you should do instead is to wait until you get feedback and then add it to your copy as soon as you can. The sooner you can increase your website sales conversions through the use of testimonials the better.

Ideally your testimonials need to say one (or all) of these 3 things:

1. Highlight specific benefits gained from using your product
2. Specific results gained from using your product
3. The experience gained from doing business with you

Testimonials can be highly effective if you choose the right ones. Don’t just settle for anything, just to get testimonials on your copy.

It’s far better to wait for the ones that will be effective and help with your website sales conversions instead of just using whatever you can find.

The best places to add your testimonials are at the top of your website near your headline, in the middle of your page, at the bottom of the page and on your order page.

Testimonials work on the same basis as word of mouth advertising. Word of mouth advertising works well because of that trust factor.

All the experts agree that people are more likely to listen and respond to what a typical customer has to say about your product then anything you have to say.

Here’s how to “turbo-charge” the power of your testimonials (and your sales conversions)…

There are three major ways in which you can create your landing page conversion rate. All landing pages created by professionals usually include these three elements at a few others.

1. The first way in which you can increase your conversion rate is through personalization. This is usually done in two ways: the first way is by providing a photo of yourself.

5. In addition to these four ways in which to increase your conversion rate, you should always guarantee a product for a specific number of days.

If you sell through Click Bank, you actually wont have a choice about your guarantee time span. But if you’re using Paypal or some other check out program, you will want to make sure you clearly state that customers can return your product for any reason within a given period of time after the purchase.

Follow all of these steps and you will significantly increase your landing page conversion rate.

• Hot topics of discussion
• Best-selling books
• Interest-grabbing magazine articles
• Emerging trends

The list could go on and on, right?

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that you need to monitor what’s going on around you, specifically looking for the latest topic everyone’s talking about.

You can do this by regularly browsing 4 trend and event “hot spots”…

1. Active Forums. Find at least one ACTIVE forum related to your market and regularly visit it to look for ideas. Keyword here is “active”. The ideal forum will have a number of participants who regularly post messages.

2. News Feeds. You can begin with Google.com’s news center at http://news.google.com.

You should also look for a news feed or site that is specific to your field of interest. For example: I regularly visit http://ChristianHeadlines.com to stay on top of events related to some of my Christian sites.

3. Article Directories. Spend a few minutes at your favorite article directory, focusing specifically on the NEWEST articles posted and the TOP RECENT articles read. I regularly check http://goarticles.com.

4. Competitor’s Lists. You’ll also want to “spy” on what your competition is doing by joining their lists. When a major competitor begins highlighting certain topics in their content (I.E. “articles”) and / or releases or promotes a specific product, it’s a good indication that you should pay attention.

All of these things allow you to capitalize on the current buzz!
